I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Chimera: Book One - The Righteous and the Lost

This book hooked me with its promise of a “band of thieves” and an “impossible heist”. Did anyone else get Six of Crows vibes? Add that this all takes place in outer space and on different planets — sign me up.

Then the technical difficulties hit. It turns out that Netgalley eArc graphic novels and my devices do not work well together. Fortunately, my library’s Hoopla has the individual issues. This first book includes issues #1-6.

This series is awesome! I am totally hooked!

As promised, yes, we do have a band of thieves and a heist. Each character has their own motivations, secrets and agenda. We also have a fun brother/sister dynamic. That would have been enough. The story includes religion and gods and monsters and alien cultures and a pet locust the size of a Shih Tzu. The story is epic in scope and also very human.

Warning — you may be a little confused at the beginning, intrigued but confused. Just keep going.

The colour palette reminds me of the work of Jen Wang (The Prince and the Dressmaker, In Real Life), but Ellis’ art style is all their own.

Please note that this graphic novel includes violence (including torture and genocide).

Highly recommend! I have now read up to issue #9 and will definitely be continuing.
